“Taylor.” Snake called to him as he walked in the door. Taylor was at his house for the day and no doubt Butterfly and Evie were giving him hell in some way or another by now. He found Taylor in the living room reading. The kids were all resting in various stated of napping.
“I need your help on something.” Snake came in and sat in his recliner. Taylor glanced over curiously then smiled when Steven crawled over making grabby hands at his father. Snake picked the boy up before going on.
“We need to make someone appear.” Snake went on cradling his son in his arms.
“Appear!” Taylor exclaimed incredulously. “Man don’t we usually make them disappear.”
“Tomorrow.” Snake looked down at his boy. He knew quite well why Addie needed and deserved his help. “We need to make an identity.”
Taylor became happy as a school boy when Snake mentioned what they would be doing. “I’ll be right back.”
Snake nodded and played with Steven’s hair. Shortly after Taylor left Cassie climbed up in the chair with Snake too. It was as if she had a beacon for when he came home. Even when she was asleep Cassie would come down to sleep beside him. Snake didn’t mind. He wrapped his arm around her and settled in. Taylor came back with his laptop.
“What are we up to?” Taylor asked as he resumed his seat and opened the computer.
“We got to make an identity for a friend of mine.” Plissken had barely looked up from his kids.
“What’s she need?” Taylor was more than prepared for requests like this from Snake.
“He.” Snake corrected. “She wants to adopt her boy but he ain’t even got a real name.”
“So, whole identity?” Taylor inquired.
“Looks like it.” Snake shrugged. “Addie gave me the name they decided for him. Work from there.”
Taylor took the slip of paper Snake handed him with the name scrawled on it. Taylor read it. “Good name.”
“Yeah, it is.” Snake agreed as he slithered out from under Cassie. Steven was still in his arms when he went over to sit beside Taylor. “She put a birth date on the other side.”
“Birth certificate, social security and adoption papers I take it?” Taylor was already typing furiously.
“Think we should do some records for schools?” Snake watched carefully. Steven was nestling to him and fussing a little but he went back to sleep.
“Nah. Home school works fine.” Taylor didn’t look up but his face grew concerned. “How are we going to get the official seals?”
Snake thought it over while repositioning Steven. “Can’t you just put them in the system then go to the state building and request official ones?”
Taylor looked up for a moment before grinning. “Using the system to your advantage?”
“Why shouldn’t I?” Snake chuckled. “Check to see what you need to get a copy of a kid’s birth certificate.”
Taylor quickly had the information. “Looks like the adoption papers should be enough.”
“That easy?” Snake couldn’t believe it.
“Looks like it.” Taylor responded and he was back to typing.
“Huh.” Plissken leaned back watching Taylor work. There wasn’t much to do. It brought into perspective what Taylor must feel like every time Plissken was bent over building diagrams. They both had their specialties and Plissken had no problem kicking back while he waited. “Want a beer?”
“Sure.” Taylor nodded.
Snake got up carrying Steven still. On instinct he patrolled the house before going to the kitchen. Baby Mason, Bria and Mia we all curled up in his bed. Evie and Butterfly were in the den and Lila was sleeping in the spare bedroom. He took a check at all the doors and looked out the windows then finally went to the kitchen. He poured himself some orange juice and got Taylor his beer before returning to the living room.
“It’s done.” Taylor smiled as he closed the laptop then took the beer.
“Already?” Snake sat down on the couch again.
“All she has to do is go down and request the official copy. It’ll cost her $25 greenbacks or so.” Taylor took a drink of his beer.
“Guess I should call her.” Snake shrugged and fished out his cellphone to give Addie a call. “Tomorrow we make people disappear.”
Plissken grinned while he listened to the phone ring. “I got the perfect person in mind too.”
