I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Snake had just met up with Taylor outside of the Capitol. This was going to be the big hit, the Federal Records Department. It was the source of the deceit and lies that had been coming from this government since the Leningrad Ruse and it had to end.
“Hey Snake.”
Snake sighed heavily wanting to get this done and over with. He stopped anyway looking at the two women who were approaching. He didn’t recognize them. Quickly he glanced at Taylor who was just now noticing them.
“I don’t have time for this.” Snake hissed as he headed into the thicker crowd hoping Taylor had enough sense to follow.
I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black
With flowers and my love both never to come back
I see people turn their heads and quickly look away
Like a new born baby it just happens ev’ry day
Snake continued down the street surveying the parked cars. His one good eye trailing over their interiors as he moved through the crowd searching for a get away car. After blocks of searching Snake found what he was looking for. The keys dangled from the ignition like a prize just beyond his reach. He tried the doors. They were locked.
“Fuck.” He muttered looking back at Taylor who was still hobbling through the crowd. Snake turned angrily on the car and drew his gun tempted by the desire to shoot out the window.
“Snake, aw man, what are you doing?”
Snake’s antagonized gaze turned on Taylor. His brow rose briefly at the distraught expression on his friends face before he slammed the butt of the pistol into the driver’s side window. He reached down unlocking the door as his eye monitored the crowd for the police.
“7th and Concord, 35 minutes.” Snake stated as he pointed at Taylor.
“I’ll be there Snake, man I won’t dump ya like the rest.”
Snake smiled knowing he could count on Taylor to cover his back. Snake patted him on the shoulder as he got into the car and headed toward the bank.
I look inside myself and see my heart is black
I see my red door and it has been painted black
Maybe then I’ll fade away and not have to face the facts
It’s not easy facin’ up when your whole world is black
Snake passed through the alley behind the USPF building like a ghost. The door wasn’t locked. Slowly, Snake’s hand slid from its handle as he contemplates the suspicious door. He glanced down the alley in both directions, then back at the door. “Hell, they don’t know I’m coming.” He thought as he cautiously slipped inside. Snake was on edge in the hall. Something wasn’t right but he made his way through the dark despite his qualms.
Snake paused at the intersection of the two halls to adjust his night vision. “This is all wrong.” Snake was becoming more and more certain that he had been set up. He stepped forward to disarm the security cameras. His ears strained to make out a sound behind him. He waited, hands poised over the control box. The next sound was crystal clear. It was the slow grind of metal against metal, the jack of a pistol sliding quietly in the dark. The gunfighter took over as his hand nervously made its way toward his hip. Instinct ran full speed as he drew the weapon turned and fired in one smooth motion.
Snake watched the body fall in the eerie green of the night vision. Horror slowly sank in as he saw the face falling toward the ground. It was Thompson his old college basketball teammate. He knew the face but his vision snapped from the body to the sound of footsteps echoing in the hall. They had heard the shot and Snake had to get out now or he would be sent back to the mental ward. He stepped over the body but couldn’t look at it. It wasn’t an old friend on the ground any longer but an enemy. Snake knew if he had the chance Thompson would have shot him in the back. That was not a friend.
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue
I could not foresee this thing happening to you
Snake stopped on the station platform watching the hummer light approaching.
“Taylor!” He screamed toward the escalator. It remained empty and Snake anxiously glanced at the front of the Hummer.
“Taylor!” He yelled again. Still nothing. “Shit.” Snake growled looking between the hummer and the staircase. He knew it was foolish to run back for Taylor with all the riot police but he was all Snake had. Taylor was the last vestige of who Snake was and he needed that memory to keep his sanity. The hummer rushed past and Snake’s eyes turned toward the Stairs.
“Taylor!” Snake bellowed again running for the stairs. He flew up them three at a time driven by fear for Taylor and fear of being caught. Snake skidded to a halt at the top of the stairs. Taylor was standing before him surrounded. He looked between the row of guns and Taylor. Snake dropped the bag of blue backs he was carrying.
“Drop the bag, Taylor.” He half growled and half pleaded. Taylor shook his head “no” and said something that Snake couldn’t make out over the gunfire. Snake watched the body fall and grimaced feeling a surge of cold anger as he looked around at the cops. They would pay dearly for this.
If I look hard enough into the settin’ sun
My love will laugh with me before the mornin’ comes
Snake lay on the California beach staring out at the woman pulling his surfboard out of the water. He grinned as she strode across the sand dragging the board.
“I give up Snake teach me to surf.” She kicked sand on his chest and laughed. “Come on Fly Boy. Show me what you can do.”
Snake laughed and grabbed her ankle dumping her on to the beach. “Still faster then you, Commie.” It was a joke and no one else could get away with calling her by that name. From Snake it only brought a string of girlish giggles from the otherwise tough glider pilot.
“Commie!’ She accused indignantly. “You treasonous bastard!” She added reaching out and snatching his beret. She was on her feet before he could speak.
“Come back here!” Snake demanded.
Sophia turned to face him laughing. “You Americans are too slow.” She called back to him as she took off down the beach leaving Snake struggling to catch up.
I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black
I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes
I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
Hmm, hmm, hmm,...
I wanna see it painted, painted black
Black as night, black as coal
I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black
Snake watched the president intently as he threatened to shut down Cuba. If only he knew. A pleased smile spread on Snake’s lips as he watched the broadcast. Malloy gave him a curious look and Snake raised a brow at the man standing near him. If anyone could see what he was up to it was Malloy but as of yet he hadn’t figured out the ruse. He would soon know what was up but it would be too late. Snake for once in his life had all the cards and all the power. Now he was just waiting patiently to use them and disappear.
