"I was talking to
zippyknowsbest mun and she mentioned that writing is hard and you know what? It is. But it's also a rewarding self-challenge we all put ourselves up against with prompt writing and so on. We have fangirling communities and places like You Rock and Fic Rec Friday where other people can tell you what they enjoy from your arsenal of writing...
But here's the thing, they only see the end product, not all the possibly hairpulling it took to get a certain piece just so. They may not know the fandom or the character the way you do. Maybe they don't know that you were on fire when you wrote something and it came out on the page exactly as you had imagined it."
Instead of pointing out someone else's fantastic work, list three of your own favorites. Maybe it's an entire prompt. Maybe just a few lines that nailed a character's voice. Is it a set up for an RP thread? A journal entry a muse had to write? A stylistic experiment that succeeded? From Enemies to AlliesThis is a 50,000+ word, never ending behemoth of Post-Escape from LA goodness. The first chapter I wrote
Dawn of a Brand New Day was my first foray into Post LA fiction I had done. It was a big what if plot that I'd been kicking around. What happens to Snake and the world after he shuts the world down? Does he get the rest and freedom he was searching for? With encouragement from
fatherartist,
merflly and
natoth I just kept expanding on his adventures after the end of the movie. It is by no means complete. I am not sure the series will ever be complete. I really started fleshing Snake out in this writing. His past, his motivations and the deep workings of his personality all were the goal. There were a lot of firsts in my writing of Snake that came in on creating this series. The first smut, the first argument, the first big piece on his weaknesses. I love this so dearly because in writing it Snake's voice became crystal clear.
The Leningrad RuseLeningrad is the big turning point in Snake's life. It is what makes him the bitter, half crazy, very angry man that we all know. The thing is the event is only hinted at here and there in Canon. Talk of it is broken up into a comment here and a word there. I sat down one day with the novel and wrote down every reference to the Ruse that I could find. With the list in hand I sat and read it over and over. I had to let the idea stew from the pieces. It was also hard to write because this is the critical moment that Snake becomes Snake and loses who he used to be. He loses his eye and after loses everything even himself. The piece had to be perfect. Writing it actually blindsided me. I had sat down to write something else and it just went. I felt drained from writing it and sick from the intensity but I love the piece so much because it is everything I wanted it to be.
Snake and Xena's WeddingThis involves a lot of people, a lot of planning and a lot of very nervous bad ass muses about to bolt. I love so much about it. The non-traditional vows that Snake and Xena wrote for each other, the way it flows and the way the emotion grips you. I am not sure I ever told everyone involved how thankful I was for all the work that went into it. There were so many threads that led up to it. All the time Snake spent talking to Darius about his self-worth, the fighting between Xena and Snake, the fun some muses had in planning with him, bachelor parties, Greek ceremonies and so much else that makes the wedding a very satisfying climax. I'm so glad it turned out so beautifully written.
