“Your baby should be coming soon?” Aurora smiled at the rather stressed man across from her.
“Any time now.” Snake answered. His eye was down on his cellphone sitting on the side table. Normally Mrs. Patterson forbid them in the sessions but given the circumstances she had allowed it for the time being.
“How many children will you have?”
“Six and the one we take for foster visits occasionally.” Snake replied with a rather nervous smile. He very rarely got bent out of shape but birth had done that to him. It wasn’t the birth per say but the uncertainty of when.
“Whose idea was it to have so many?”
“Mine.” Snake admitted.
“How do your partners feel about it?” Aurora asked gently.
“They’re alright.” Snake was milling the question over in his mind.
“Just alright?”
“Took time.” Snake answered while trying to put his thoughts together. “Xena took it better than Bria. Probably the age. I’ve talked to both of them about it.”
“What did they say?”
“Xena wanted to take it slow at first. When we finally decided to have one was when I found out I was…..” Snake couldn’t finish the sentence.
“I know what you mean. Go on.” She was trying to comfort him.
“I gave her time. The first time she said ‘we have a daughter’ and ‘our daughter’ was, there aren’t any words for it. I think having her own son back helped it out some.” Snake sighed trying to think. “When Bria and I got together I had, really, only one that was still a child and she was pregnant. We didn’t talk about it much until she found out she was pregnant this last time. We had a long talk about it. About her age and not wanting to stay home. In the end we agreed things were different. Our ages are different. Puts us in different points in our life. After that talk I worked it out so I would only have to be in the shop when called. I’ve been staying home with the kids a lot now so she can spend more time being a young like she wants.”
“How has Bria reacted to that change?”
“She’s happy about it I think.” Snake nodded in agreement with himself.
“You do well with always being together?”
“We aren’t. We spend a lot of time together but when she needs space I take the kids out or if we need time Evie will watch them. There’s a lot of freedom and working together to raise the kids and grandkids.”
“Sounds like a good family plan for all of you.” Aurora nodded before going on. “What do you think all this gives your wives?”
Snake had to think this question over. “Freedom. They don’t have to take care of the kids or cook all the meals. There’s none of that housewife bullshit in my house. There’s a lot they can do that most women have to give up to have a family. Bria could go out and work if she wanted without much trouble. She has time to go out with friends and doesn’t need to find a sitter. They both know I’ll do everything I can to make them happy. Even if that means sitting home with the kids while they go to a club or being there when they need it.”
There was a pause but Aurora said nothing because Plissken looked like he would say more. It was some time before Snake had his thoughts clear enough.
“They have the best of both worlds. They have the family and the security without it being something that straps them down. I’ll always step in to give them a break or anything else they need.”
“Many women don’t have that. Do you think they take it for granted?”
Plissken was about to say something but didn’t. Finally the words came out. “No but I wonder at times if they feel like they are.”
“You should ask them.”
“Maybe I should.” Snake agreed.
