littlemoonglow all children mentioned in this story are original creations and owned by their writers.
Lila had come out to stay with them for the weekend. It was a compromise that he had reached with Bria. He understood not wanting another child but he couldn’t abandon the little girl. A middle ground was keeping with the visits until she was adopted or Snake managed to see a different response from his wife.
Today he was home and Bria was sleeping so he sent the bigger kids outside with the dogs. Given there was so much room between the house and the main road, almost a mile, Plissken didn’t worry much. He stayed inside with the twins and left Cassie, Lila and Mason out the door with the eight dogs. Snake still hadn’t figured out why Evie’s dogs were in his house. He couldn’t be bothered with it.
He needed to make lunch for the kids and get the twins dressed. They were still in their onsies they slept in. Upstairs and finding clothes for them was always a chore. They grew so fast now that it seemed as though things that fit yesterday didn’t today. Snake was just heading downstairs again when he heard the telltale wail of a hurt child.
Throwing the clothes on the couch he ran out the back door toward the sound. He didn’t stop for shoes or a coat. The snow was painfully cold as he headed out for the garden. The mass of dogs barking told him that was where the injury was. Snake came up on a ball in the snow. Lila was still screaming when he picked her up. Immediately she clung to him.
“What happened munchkin?” Snake looked down concerned and then it turned to fear when he saw the blood on her little pink mitten.
“I...I…” She couldn’t get it out through the crying.
He looked her over and saw the reason for it immediately. A scuffed scrape on her forehead near the hairline. He should have figured given how little she was.
“Come on. Let’s go inside.” He picked her up and carried her through the snow. He was getting cold being out here in just his pants. It was well below freezing. Once inside he took her in the bathroom and set her on her feet. Lila leaned heavily against him as he pulled off the coat. He could feel a little blood on his shoulder or maybe it was more tears. He couldn’t be sure.
“There we go.” Snake tossed her coat out the door and picked her up on the sink. “Let’s have a look.”
The wailing had died down to a muffled hiccupping sob. “Oh, I think you knocked the top of your head clean off.”
Snake smiled as he wet a wash cloth and wiped the wound gently. Cleaned it didn’t look that bad. There were a few scrapes but nothing that needed stitches or even a band-aid. It took a second of pressure to stop the bleeding and the tears went slowly away too.
The cloth had barely been set aside before she had her arms up for him. He put a gentle kiss on the scratch which brought a faint smile to her face reddened by tears and cold. Snake picked her up and rocked her. Lila still sobbed some as he walked out. He picked up the coat on the way through and hung it up. Cassie was waiting for him and he nodded.
“She’s alright sweetie.” Snake smiled at his worried daughter. “She had a little crash landing in the garden.”
Those were their words since most of the injuries Cassie had sustained since he adopted her were literal crash landings while learning to fly. Cassie seemed happy to know Lila would be alright and headed for the other room to get out of her winter clothes. Plissken heard Lila’s sobs quiet and knew she was falling asleep.
Lunch still needed made. Plissken glanced at the little girl in his arms and decided that sandwiches were for lunch today. After taking off Mason’s coat and getting him settled in the living room with something to do Plissken returned to the kitchen. He went in and pulled out the ingredients for the sandwiches with one hand. Surprised by his own dexterity he managed to make them and add veggies with one hand. Cassie came to get hers and he took some left over macaronis in to Mason and was about to feed the twins when he noticed they had gone back to sleep. Shrugging he got his sandwich and sat down maneuvering Lila in his lap. She held on to him and he quickly gave up on putting her down.
One bite out of his sandwich and Cassie was up on the other side snuggling against him. He gave her a kiss on the forehead as she settled in with the fleece blanket beside him. She looked tired to. Plissken rolled his eye and sat in confusion with no place to set his plate. Balancing it, finally, on the back of the couch he sat back to try and eat lunch.
