Snake sat on base watching the reports. The bombing of the states had started early in the day. Every soldier in the station stood around the TV and watched in horror. New York City, Chicago, LA were all covered in a thick cloud of gas and burning. Soldier knew what it was. They had all seen it on the battlefield. Several men had started to cry. No one said anything to them except words of comfort that dealt with killing the Russian bastards. They all knew men and women who had family, spouses, children in those cities and to everyone it was horror.

Snake just sat there stunned with his eyes locked on the TV. He thought back to all the treaties that stopped nuclear attacks and suddenly Plissken questioned the sanity in them. All those people. The Russians had to be out of their minds.

"Bradley." Snake whispered and stood up heading away from the group crowded around the television. He pushed his way to the back and out into the hall.

"Yes Lieutenant?" His medical officer was there but Plissken only pointed to the other room.

"You need to see the Washington dispatch." Bradley started to go white as he turned to head toward their unit's quarters.

Snake sat in front of yet another TV screen and turned it on. There was a moment of static and then something he couldn't understand. There was a view of New York City covered with the mist of light blue up to the second floor. The wind shifted the gas around in curls between the buildings. The images were not the problem. They appeared like mist laying over the city. The words were what hit him.

Washington Directive 12-43. In relation to the surge in crime stemming from the gas bombings of United States cities President Alderson has declared an emergency police state. This act is effective until control is returned and the crime rates are returned to normal.

Snake took a few minutes before speaking. "A police state?" There was another long pause. "Does anyone else know?"

"No." Bradley replied.

"Can we call home?" Snake was just as worried about his family as the others.

"No. Calls home are forbidden until further notice." Bradley looked down unable to face his commanding officer with this news.

"This is fucked." Snake commented watching the footage again. "God damned Ruskies."
