We know it is swollen and that the change in Barometric pressure associated with thunderstorms and rain causes him severe pain. There is also the fact that like the crazies he is light sensitive. That's why he wears the patch but he still has the eye.
The over all damage is mild corneal scarring that causes halos in his vision. He can see however from it. The muscle damage is very bad. The iris no longer functions to the pupil is always fully dilated and the muscles that move the lid and eye are slowed from the damage as well.
If you read the novel it talks a bout a lot of his eye and the damage throughout the book.
