Back to foster care (Tag Billy and Hope)

Takes place two days after this and the day after this.

Snake hobbled to the garage wrestling one handed with the lock and keys. He’d promised Hope he would take her to see Billy. Nothing would stop him, even being shot. Plissken pulled out Billy’s bike first and pushed it up the ramp into the Humvee then went back for Hope’s bike. Hers was heavier and he had to struggle to push it inside. The task completed Snake sat on the bumper relaxing. The pain was coming in pulses through the left side of his body, from the leg, to his shoulder and finally into the back of his eye where it felt like a power drill grinding into his skull.

He had already maxed out on his daily dose of painkillers and turned to a few sips from his flask to help dull the pain or at least relax him some. After a few more minutes Plissken pulled down the ramp and closed up the back waiting for Hope to come out. It wasn’t long until she showed up with her back pack and got in.

As much as Snake hated to admit it, his daughter had to help him into the humvee. He clutched the wheel with a death grip but managed to smile at his daughter in the seat beside him. She knew he was in pain, everyone knew he was in pain but it was old habit to hide that weakness as much as possible. Push on through they always said in the military and Plissken still took that to heart.

The drive into the city was fairly uneventful though Plissken was anxious the whole way. He knew the cops were still looking for him. Luckily the foster home was in the suburbs. The cops still believed Snake was a full time city dweller. That had advantages he had never dreamed of.

Snake pulled into the lot and dreaded leaving his guns outside. Looking over at Hope bounding from the passenger side removed his hesitation. It took him some time to slowly walk to the front of the building. He refused to limp and in order to accomplish that through the pain he had to take his time. Snake pulled his coat off and hung it in the reception area before checking in. It was more difficult this time due to the news but he managed. He filled out Hope’s papers and soon presented her with a visitor’s badge. Snake was glad it was the woman out front. The guy who worked in the place creeped him out, no one should be that happy.

“He’s back in the TV room.” Snake motioned down the hall. He had a pretty good sense of the layout. He waited for Hope then headed for the room where he was told Billy was.

Billy sat up on his bed, blankets curled around his shoulders, hoping they were going to come back. He felt bad for making a fuss but he was just so angry. He didn't want to disappoint Snake and he didn't want to make Hope sad.

Snake smiled at Hope. Things can be sometimes babydoll but they can also work out. Look at all the things Xena and I've been through.

Hope stopped as she got into the doorway of Billy's room. "Sorry Billy."

"Don't be sad, Hope. Be something gooder. Be important. Be helpful. Be happy." Billy hugged his legs to his chest.

"If we can't be together forever, lets be together as long as we can, I guess," Billy was still scowling, but he pushed over on his bed and opened his blanket for Hope. "We can hope. Who can Hope better than Hope?"

Hope moved towards the bed and climbed up, curling up under the blanket. "I don't want it to just stop, don't wanna grow up without you."

Billy put his arms around Hope, wrapping the blanket around them both. "Don't wanna grow up without you neither. If we can't stop, you'll just have to babysit me when you get big. So we can still play together."

"Be no more huggles or kisses like now, be gainst the law."

"I hug and kiss Mac sometimes. 'Sides if you stick your tongue you have to get a kiss, no way around it."

"Wont be the same," she held his hand in her own, "Mac's like your mom or something, I don't wanna end up like that."

Billy nodded and snuggled up to her "Yeah, you're right. Well what can we do?"

Hope shook her head, "Less you can grow big or travel in time, nuffin."

Snake had been listening to the conversation from the door and figured it was time to talk.

I can see what I can do, if you want, but I think Mac should be asked too. Billy's just as much a part of her life as yours.

Billy looked sadly at Snake. "I wish I could be part of both their lives. I love Hope and Mac."

You'll never stop being part of either one but if I'm going to bargain for you to grow up with Hope, you need to talk to Mac about it first.

Hope looked up, "Billy might not want to Daddy."

Billy started to cry. "I'm not a super hero like Hope. I'm a human boy. I can't get big fast like her. Except, maybe I can get for a little and then be small again?" Billy wanted to grow up with Hope, he really wanted Hope to grow up with him. He wanted to be able to become a normal kid and then normal adult. The real way.

"You can't." Slowly Hope looked at Snake and smiled sadly, "Look after him Daddy, keep him safe for me."

Tears fell down her cheeks and she hugged Billy, kissing his lips ever so softly before slipping off the bed and hugging Snake, "Love you, but I think it's time to grow up now. Let Billy heal before he cares too much."

Tearfully she stepped back, "Never forgets you."

"Never forgets you neither," Billy tried to reach out for her. "Love you. Already care too much. Don't want you to go away."

Yes, he could if he wanted to.

Snake looked at Hope and shook his head. One hurt for another. Snake didn't hug her. You will rob him of the time he has and do the same to me.

Snake backed away from her. There will be no healing from this, not for either of us. We will lose something we can't replace.

"No, please Daddy. Don't let him." It would be harder if he grew up like her and then went back to being a child, they would both lose so much more. It would more than break their hearts.

"And I'll be here, just bigger. You've got Solan to spend your time with and I'll still come to the shop."

Why should I stop you both from being happy?

Snake glared at Hope looking very hurt. Will you stop pretending that boy thinks anything of me because he doesn't. I'm nothing to him not his father, not anything.
